Five critical moments in Austin Bold history
Although Austin Bold FC have only played two USL Championship seasons thus far, there’s been plenty of drama, action, goals, and even some silverware. Here are the five most important (ahem...boldest!) moments for Bold FC:
Winning Copa Tejas
The goal of any sports club is to win some hardware. That doesn’t happen often for expansion clubs, but Bold FC were able to buck the trend and win the Copa Tejas, a supporter-created trophy awarded to the best Texan USL Championship squad, in their inaugural season. That’s right! The Kings of Texas are right here in ATX (the 2020 cup was quashed due to Covid). Bold FC clinched the victory on September 1, 2019, disposing of Rio Grande Valley FC 3-0 behind goals from Andrew Lima, Ema Twumasi, and the late Promise Isaac.
Inaugural game and first win at Bold Stadium
The Bold’s first-ever game at Bold Stadium was on March 30, 2019 against San Antonio FC, which culminated in a 1-0 victory for the home team. In front of a sold-out crowd of 5,000 raucous supporters, Brazillian legend Kleber “Gladiator” Giacomazzi scored the winning goal with a tidy finish off a corner kick in the 77th. It was an apropo start to an exciting season.
The legacy of Promise Issac
Despite all the excitement of the 2019 Bold season, there was undoubtedly tragedy as well. 31-year-old forward Promise Isaac died suddenly while working out at his apartment on October 2, 2019. Promise was an excellent player, but, more importantly, a fabulous human being. As Bold FC manager Marcelo Serrano said, “[Promise was] a man of great wisdom... it was impossible not to love him.” Despite the loss, the show had to go on and two weeks later, the squad traveled to Salt Lake to take on the Real Monarchs, where they battled to a 2-2 road draw dedicated to their lost teammate.
The 2020 home opener against New Mexico United
So far, all of the Bold’s top moments came during the inaugural season. This is no disrespect to their sophomore campaign, which was as compelling as it was complicated. Covid-19 changed the world and it certainly affected the Bold, who had a huge break in their season and made them one of the first professional sports teams to have a widespread outbreak of the virus. At one point, the Bold could only muster 15 healthy players to their game against San Antonio FC. The bench was composed of one field player, a player-coach goalkeeper and two additional keepers—both teenagers. That said, let’s flash back to the pre-Covid world, March 7, 2020, when Bold FC opened their season at home against New Mexico United, who brought a rowdy cadre of travelling supporters. In front of an electric audience and in a zooty new kit, Andre Lima slotted home a penalty for a 1-0 victory.
Kris Trypak's off-the-bench hat trick
The Bold boast a menagerie of local talent including the beloved Sonny G, promising Beto Avila, newly minted full international AJ Francois, lanky Nate Adamolekun, and the headband-wearing Kris Tyrpak. On June 1, 2019 in a game against the Tulsa Roughnecks, Tyrpak entered the game in the 53rd minute with his team down 2-0. Eight minutes later, Trypak smacked a 20-yarder into the onion bag, then again just eight minutes later off a 15-yard volley, and, thrillingly, finished off his hat trick in stoppage time leading the Bold to an incredible 3-2 comeback victory. Unbelievable!
