Summer of Soccer Watch Guide: Tuesday, August 8 (What to Watch)

LeBald James | JFF

Lorne Donaldson, Jamaica women's national team head coach

In Women's World Cup action on Tuesday, we'll have the rest of the Round of 16 matches, while in Leagues Cup, we'll get the last of the Round of 32 matches before a two-day break and the Round of 16 resuming on Friday.

4 a.m. ET

Colombia vs. Jamaica

FS1/Telemundo/Peacock

Colombia is through to the knockout phase for the second in its history. The only other time was in 2015 when it was beaten 2-0 by the USA. For Jamaica, this is uncharted territory. The Reggae Girlz will walk out onto the pitch in Melbourne as the first-ever Caribbean team to play in a women's World Cup knockout match.

With so many shocks and surprises at the 2023 World Cup, it doesn't seem that far-fetched for either Colombia or Jamaica to make the semifinals or even the final.

After beating Germany 2-1 in the group stage, and thus topping Group H, Colombia quickly became everyone's favorite dark horse to win the tournament. A 1-0 defeat to Morocco, which was inconsequential to the South Americans, has perhaps dampened expectations.

For Colombia to move on, it will have to get past statistically the best defense in the competition. Jamaica is the only team left in Australia and New Zealand that is yet to concede a goal. A good mix of a compact 4-4-2 formation and goalkeeper Becky Spencer being on her toes has produced the imperious defensive solidity.

Teenager Linda Caicedo is one of the most talented players at this World Cup, and already has two golazos to her name. Could she be the one to break the incredible Jamaican resolve?

7 a.m. ET

France vs. Morocco

FS1/Telemundo/Peacock

The final match of the round of 16 contests will take place in Adelaide. Group F winners France will meet Group H runners-up Morocco. The winner will meet the co-hosts Australia in the quarterfinals.

The North Africans have been one of many Cinderella stories at this World Cup, but perhaps they are the greatest surprise of them all. Despite opening the tournament with a 6-0 defeat to Germany, Morocco managed to advance out of the group with consecutive 1-0 wins over South Korea and Colombia. In turn making a mockery of the FIFA rankings that placed them at 70.

Morocco is also one of eight nations that have been playing in their first-ever women's World Cup. However, the Atlas Lionesses were the only ones to make it to the knockout rounds. And the rewriting of history doesn't stop there. Morocco is also the first-ever Arab nation to make it this far at the competition.

France, a more established force, is into its sixth consecutive knockout round appearance at the women's World Cup. Les Bleues deserve credit for topping a difficult group alongside Jamaica, Brazil, and Panama. Especially when Herve Renard's team improved its attacking in every match.

After starting the tournament with a limp 0-0, France scored eight goals in its final two group stage games. Kadidiatou Diani scored her only goals of the tournament when she netted a hat-trick against Panama. The forward will be hungry to add to her tally and potentially make a case for the golden boot.

But don't count out Morocco too fast. Reynald Pedros' team has looked happy to sit deep and absorb pressure. Expect France to have the ball, and their opponent to frustrate.

8 p.m. ET

Club América vs. Nashville SC

Apple TV (MLS Season Pass)

Sam Surridge will play! That's the promise from Nashville SC manager Gary Smith, which makes this exciting matchup even more exciting. We don't know how Surridge will be in the Nashville lineup, but the idea of Hany Mukhtar having a target striker to link up with is pretty enticing. Nashville might be charmed in this tournament; they nearly let it slip against Cincinnati but ousted them in pens and killed the dream of a quad for Knifey Lion.

América hasn't had a perfect tournament — witness the 4-1 loss to a Columbus team that had just lost Lucas Zelarayan to the trade window — but they're still one of Liga MX's best hopes for capturing the Leagues Cup trophy.

Toluca vs. Minnesota United FC

Apple TV (MLS Season Pass)

Toluca's been something of a surprise in this tournament, scoring four goals in each of their three matches to date. It might be a challenge for them to make it four in a fourth straight, especially given that Dayne St. Clair's been having a great tournament as well.

While Loons watchers have been paying attention to Emanuel Reynoso per usual, Bongokuhle Hlongwane is having something of a breakout tournament, getting a brace allowing them to advance past an impressive Columbus team to get to this stage.

10 p.m. ET

Tigres UANL vs. CF Monterrey

Apple TV (MLS Season Pass)

It's a bit odd to say "what might have been" about a much-anticipated Clasico Regio in the Leagues Cup Round of 16, but Germán Berterame was having the best Leagues Cup of anyone not named Lionel Messi, but then fractured his left foot against the Timbers and is obviously out for the remainder of the tournament.

Monterrey's still got talent, of course, but when Andre-Pierre Gignac is scoring on bicycle kicks and Nahuel Guzman is playing next-level mind games in penalty kicks (seek out the videos of him doing a magic trick before saving a penalty kick, as well as him being mime and pretending there was a wall in front of goal).

10:30 p.m. ET

LAFC vs. Real Salt Lake

Apple TV (MLS Season Pass)

It's the Arango Bowl! Cristian "Chicho" Arango is returning to BMO Stadium for the first time since he took a detour into Liga MX and returned to MLS to be part of an impressive midseason series of moves to put the Utah team into MLS Cup (and U.S. Open Cup) contention.

LAFC scored seven goals in their opener against FC Juarez, after getting a bye to sit out the group stages. It seems like the rest has done them good, though they'll have a tougher road now that they're at this stage of the bracket.

Whoever gets past this match faces the Tigres-Rayados winner, by the way. If it's LAFC-Tigres, it's a 2020 CCL rematch and effectively the final before the final. RSL already lost 3-0 to Monterrey.
