Once again, the Houston Dash is set to be looking for a new head coach.
On Friday, sources close to the club informed The Striker that interim head coach Juan Carlos Amorós is set to depart the Texas NWSL club. The decision is understood to be one of Amorós' making.
The Striker understands that the Dash has tried to retain the Spaniard, but Amorós has chosen to pursue other opportunities. Houston is expected to make the news public in the coming days.
Amorós became the interim head coach of the Dash in July 2022. Taking control of the team for the second half of the regular season, Amorós went 6-2-3 during the regular season and Houston finished a club-record fourth in the standings. He made NWSL history by becoming the first head coach to win their first three matches in the league.
Amorós also became the first head coach to lead the Dash to the NWSL postseason. In front of a club-record home crowd, Houston fell 2-1 to the Kansas City Current in the quarterfinals. An extraordinarily late goal from Kate Del Fava in the 10th minute of second-half injury time landed the decisive blow.
The heavy turnover at the head coaching position for the Dash began when James Clarkson was suspended days before the start of the regular season in April 2022. Assistant coach Sarah Lowdon was handed the position of the acting head coach for the start of the regular season while the club searched for a more permanent replacement.
After consulting with the Houston players, and with the help of a soccer recruitment consultancy firm, eventually the club hired Amorós in the summer. He was viewed as a long-term hire for the desired trajectory of the team.
Lowdon would go on to navigate the team through the first 11 matches of the regular season. The Dash went 4-4-3 under the Englishwoman while equaling a club record of six consecutive matches unbeaten.
As of October 2022, six months after being suspended for allegations of coaching misconduct, Clarkson's verdict from the NWSL and NWSLPA's investigation remains unknown. Neither the Dash nor the league can share any additional information on when a conclusion will be reached.
