Coach Brian Lee:
“Year 1 was a great experience for me and our entire staff. The players were a daily joy and our five seniors really helped set our team standards in a way that should benefit the program for years to come. On the field, the team showed great character with several late winners and concluded the fall with their first conference tournament win in six years. Hopefully, the 2019 season set the program on an upward path toward Rice soccer becoming nationally relevant in the coming years.
The move to spring soccer should benefit us as much as any team in the country. Our four freshmen were able to acclimate and prepare through the fall, but more importantly it allowed five of our long-term injury kids to get back on the field (all would have missed or had a very modified fall). Together, that’s nine players in our every game rotation that would have at best played minor roles in fall soccer can now participate fully this spring. Our goals for the season are simply to improve daily and peak around the CUSA tournament in mid-April (Rice hosts).”
